Rafael Nadal has vowed to give 200% in his fight to be fit in time to defend his Wimbledon title in two weeks time.
The world number one has pulled out of the tournament at Queens due to a knee injury that has troubled him all season. Unable to defend his Queen’s title rumours began to circulate that he would not be able to compete at Wimbledon.
But in a statement released yesterday the Spaniard said: "I will give 200% to be at 100% for the most important date in world tennis.
"I will not go out and play on any court, let alone Centre Court at Wimbledon, if I am not 100%. I have two difficult weeks ahead of me, especially because I won't be doing what I like doing most, which is to play tennis.
"I will be working on my recovery through physiotherapy treatments as well as recovery work on the specific muscular area."
Nadal crashed out of the French Open before the beginning of the second week at the hands of eventual finalist Robin Soderling, despite being the red hot favourite to win his fifth consecutive title at Roland Garros.
Nadal has had an impressive season so far winning the Australian open on January for the first time before going on to win the Indian Wells Masters title.
He winning streak continued into the court season with win at the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters as well as a win in Barcelona but all seems to be taking its toll on the twenty three year old who has suffered with knee problems for most of his career.
"The pain was limiting certain movements in my body, which affected me mentally as well." He went on to reveal that he has been diagnosed with tendonitis in both quadricep tendons as well as suffering from fluid on the kneecap.
Last year’s Wimbledon final has gone down as one of the best tennis matches in history as Nadal, the then world number tow, and brought rival Roger Federer’s reign at SW19 to an end. After losing out to the Swiss player on two previous occasions the five set thriller finally saw Nadal get his hands on the trophy that he has always dreamed of winning.
That proved to be the start of a run of success for the Spaniard as he went on to overtake Federer at the top of the men’s ranking before going on to win gold at the Beijing Olympics.
Nadal plans to travel to London on June 16th before making a final decision on whether he will be able to defend his title.
