Roger Federer has made it through to his seventh consecutive Wimbledon final as he saw off German Tommy Haas in straight sets 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 6-3.
After his win in Paris a couple of weeks ago it appears that Federer is playing in a more relaxed manner as he tries to over take Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam record of fourteen with a win of SW19.
But it was Tommy Haas who had pushed Federer in Roland Garros taking a two set to love lead and almost sending the world number two packing, but it was not to be as Federer stormed back.
So today’s first match on a much cooler Centre Court was a chance for Haas, the oldest man left in the draw, to right the wrongs of Paris.
And in the first set it looked like it was going to be a very tightly fought affair, despite the nerves getting to Haas a little in his opening service game, neither player managed to gain the momentum as the first set was pushed into a tie-break.
But Federer was on top form in the tie break as he dominated it from every angle as he secured it 7-3 to win the first set.
Into the second and the Haas challenge remained intact and it was the serve that dominated play, Federer didn’t face a single break point throughout the entire match, and the former champion had to wait until game ten for a break point on the Haas serve.
But Haas saved the game with a huge serve down the middle. But Federer applied more pressure in the German’s next service game but once again Haas saved another break point before a screaming cross court forehand winner from Federer to force another which he didn’t let pass him by as he took the second set.
There was a certain level of inevitability now as it seemed very unlikely that Haas would be able to turn around two set to love deficit again Federer who was playing so well.
Into the third and the Haas challenge fell away as Federer finally got a handle on the German’s serve breaking him three times to wrap up a very clinical display from the former world number one.
He will now play in Andy Roddick in the final for the third time should he win he will re-write history by winning his fifteenth Grand Slam title, surpassing the record held by Sampras.
