It may be a packed field at the Roger's Cup but the top women did not have everything their own way on the opening day.

Eleventh seed Samantha Stosur had to come from a set down in her opening round match against Ayumi Morita.

Morita broke Stosur on two occasions in that first set and while Stosur got one of the breaks back she was unable to get back on level terms and Morita took it 6-4.

Into the second and it was more of a one sided affair as Stosur settled into her rhythm and range and became to dominate.

Morita only managed to take two games in that second set before Stosur broke in the sixth game of the third set to seal the match 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Stosur will now face either Shahar Peer or Aleksandra Wozniak in the second round - their match gets underway today.

Marion Bartoli was one of the big names to fall on the opening day as she fell in straight sets to Galina Voskoboeva.

The French woman has been in a rich vein of form in recent weeks but it was her serve that let her down as she was broken four times in Voskoboeva's 6-3 6-3 victory.

Speaking to the WTA after the match Bartoli said: "It was one of those days where nothing was working. I tried my hardest but I committed so many mistakes.

"It's very unusual for me, especially in the last two months or so, when I've been playing very well. I'm obviously very disappointed, but Galina played a great match, so all the credit to her."

Jelena Jankovich was another of the seeds to fall as she to crashed out in straight sets 6-1 6-3 to Julia Goerges.

Svetlana Kuznetsova also lost in an error strewn performance from the former French Open champions as she crashed out to Simona Halep 4-6 6-4 6-3.
