Serena & Venus Make Wimbledon Final

Sisters Serena and Venus Williams will face each other once again in the ladies singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday.

While both player came through their semis the way in which they saw off their opponents couldn't have been more different in the blistering heat at SW19.

Serena was up first on Centre Court against Olympic Champion and fourth seed Elena Dementieva from Russia.

While nobody really gave the Russian any chance it was a match that went the full three sets lasting almost three hours, the longest women's semi-final in the history of the tournament.

But the Russian refused to be just a footnote in the match as she battled hard against the American taking the first set to a tie break.

And it was a tie-break that she dominated and kept her cool to wrap up the set, despite double faulting on her first set point.

Into the second and it was more toe to toe action from these two women as Dementieva refused to roll over to the serving power of Serena.

And while it was powerful serving from the number two seed she didn't look entirely comfortable out on the court on the back foot for most of the match.

But the chance to break in the second came to Serena and she capitalised to lead 6-5. But Demeniteva had chances to level but when she hit a backhand wide it was all square.

Surprised by the level of fight and resistance from the Russian the Centre Court crowd really got behind Dementieva willing her to take out the American so as not to have a repeat of the all Williams final from the year before.

And fight on she did leading 5-4 she had a chance to wrap up the match, but it was on Williams' serve. With a match point Dementieva was one step from the final and but her favourite stroke the back hand slice let her down as Williams charged into the net to put away a forehand volley that levelled the match at 5-5.

More chances came Demeniteva's way at 6-5 as she managed to twice pull Serena back to deuce but Serena's desire and experience was just too much and she levelled once again.

The momentum was now very much on the side of the American as she broke in the next game leaving her serving for the match. Forcing Dementieva wide she wrapped up the match 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 8-6 to reach her fifth final.

But it was not such hard work for her sister Venus who took just fifty one minutes to dispatch the world number one Dinara Safina in a one sided match.

The defending champion looked in supreme form as she broke a visibly uncomfortable Safina time after time.

Safina being the world number one has come under fire as she has failed to capture a Grand Slam title, despite being in two finals this year, and this debate looks set to continue after yesterday's performance.

Venus took the first set 6-1 but cruised through the second as Safina failed to get a single game on the board.

With such a comprehensive victory over the Russian Venus, who is the defending champion, goes into Saturday's final as the favourite.
