After a six year wait Serena Williams has once again got her hands on the Wimbledon title as she beat sister Venus in straight sets 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
It was the fourth time that the pair had come face to face in the final at SW19 the last time being just twelve months ago, with Venus coming out triumphant.
And going into the final today Venus was the slight favourite having come through her semi final against Dinara Safina, the world number one, in such a dominant fashion. Serena however was made to fight by Elena Dementieva coming from a match point down to deny the Russian.
The first set was very nip and tuck as both women served well but it was Serena who faltered first to give Venus a sniff at a break point.
But that was snuffed out by Serena as she fired down a huge second serve to pull the game to deuce, before going on to level the match.
So with both players serving so well it didn’t come as a surprise that the first set went to a tie-break, a tie break that was quickly dominated by Serena.
With powerful serving and with some massive forehands it was the younger Williams that had the mini break as Serena opened up a 4-2 lead.
Venus’ serve failed her at the most crucial moments as an outrageous backhand lob from Serena secured her the first set.
This was not good news for the defending champion as the player that has secured the first set usually goes on to win the match.
And at 2-2 it looked like the second set was going to go the way of the first until Venus began to struggle with her serve and a double fault handed Serna the break on a plate.
Doubt and uncertainty crept into Venus’s game as her serve disintegrated further and her power and shot making ability also began to fade.
But this didn’t seem to faze Serena as her powerful serve reigned down on her sister. At 5-2 Venus was serving to stay in the match and saved three match points.
But Serena took her chance on the fourth match point as her sister netted a backhand to make Serna the champion once again. Serena has now won three of the last four Grand Slam titles, missing out on the French Open a few weeks ago.
The pair will return to Centre Court later today to play in the ladies doubles final.
