Serena Williams was in fantastic form last night as she cruised thorugh to the third round beating Melinda Czink 6-1 6-1.

The second seed was one of the big matches of the night session and she was into the next round in under an hour.

However it wasn't as convincing for sister Venus, who Serena could potentially meet in the semi final, as she saw off Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Despite a 6-4 6-2 straight sets win the third seed struggled with her serve and had to save a string of break points.

Her knee was also more heavily strapped but she told the BBC: "It's not a huge surprise that, at this time of the year, things are starting to hurt a little but I am just determined to play every match I can.

"I'm still playing well and I feel I'll continue to play better as the rounds go on. I'm trying not to make this injury a factor at all."

But the classiest performance of the day came from Flavia Pennetta, who has had a good run on the run up to the Open, as she thrashed Sania Mirza 6-0 6-0.

It wasn't a great day for the seeds as a handful of them were send crashing out yesterday including a great match from Kim Clijsters who put out Marion Bartoli.

The comeback from Clijsters looked to be over as the fourteenth seed Bartoli took the first set 5-7 but the Belgian battled back to win the match.

Clijsters drew on her years of experience to turn the match around, which she did in spectacular fashion, halting the Bartoli challenge to win 5-7 6-1 6-2.

Twelfth seed Agnieszka Radwanska was another casualty of day three as she lost 6-4 2-6 6-4 Maria Kirilenko.

It was also a bad day at the office for former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo as she suffered a heavy defeat to Aleksandra Wozniak.

The first set was a close affair but the French woman's challenge faded away in the second set falling to a straight sets 6-4 6-0 defeat.

World number one Dinara Safina returns to the court today for her second round match hoping to improve on her first round performance.
