Serena Williams Fined For Outburst

Serena Williams will not be banned for verbally abusing the chair umpire in the women's U.S. Open on Sunday evening but has been fined for her behaviour.

The American did run the risk of being banned as this latest outburst came just two years after a similar incident at Flushing Meadows that involved a line judge and a foot fault call.

Despite being on probation for that offence she has just been fined $2,000 (£1,265) for her behaviour at the weekend.

Williams lost her cool with the umpire when she was docked a point after calling out in celebration before opponent Samantha Stosur had chance to return the shot.

The docking of the point saw Williams lose the opening game of the second set as Stosur had a break point opportunity at the time.

"The Grand Slam committee director has determined that Ms Williams' conduct, while verbally abusive, does not rise to the level of a major offence under the Grand Slam code of conduct," said a USTA statement.

The rant from Williams did not impact on the concentration of her opponent Samantha Stosur as she went on to claim a 6-2 6-3 victory and her maiden Grand Slam title.
