Stanislas Wawrinka overcame Kevin Anderson in a three sets to set up a quarter final clash with in form America Mardy Fish.
Anderson was the conqueror of Andy Murray earlier in the week and he brought that confidence to the court yesterday as he pushed the fourteenth seed all the way.
It was Wawrinka, who looks to be getting back to his best after a shock early defeat at Wimbledon, who secured the one and only break of the opening set to take it 6-4.
And it was Wawrinka who was putting the Anderson serve under pressure in the second as the big hitting South African fought off four break points.
But Wawrinka couldn't find his way through and it was Anderson that grabbed the only break of the second set to take it 6-4 and force a third and deciding set.
Into the third and Wawrinka picked up the pace on his serve, he didn't face a single break point while he created two of his own.
He converted just one but that was enough to seal a 6-4 4-6 6-4 victory.
Speaking to the ATP after the match Wawrinka said: "I was happy because I had a good level of tennis today against a player that was tough.
"I had a long match in three sets, but I'm playing well in this period. All the players are doing well, too, so it is a bit complicated. I need to find the weaknesses of my opponents to be able to win."
He will now face Mardy Fish as the American saw off Ernests Gulbis, a rematch of the LA final of a couple of weeks ago.
Ernests Gulbis got the better of Fish that day to lift his first ATP Tour title but Fish was not going to let history repeat itself.
However he didn't make the best start as it was the Latvian who took the opening set as Fish struggled with his serve.
Gulbis took full advantage of his opponent's problems as he broke to take the set 6-4. Into the second and Gulbis' couldn't continue serving of efficiently and Fish managed to make inroads, for the first time.
Fish took the set 6-3 to force a decider. Gulbis was not starting to struggle with most aspects of his games as his shot choices became wild.
Fish got the early break under his belt and looked to be cruising towards a victory. And victory looked almost assured when he had five match points on the Gulbis serve in game nine.
But Gulbis fought off them all to reduced Fish's lead to 4-5 and made the America serve out the match. But there was to be no break for the Latvian as Fish wrapped up the match 4-6 6-3 6-4.
The fourth quarter final will see Tomas Berdych play Janko Tipsarevic. Berdych saw off Ivo Karlovic in three sets 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 while Tipsarevic beat Ivan Dodig, who put out Nadal, 6-1 6-4.
