Kuznetsova shocks Sharapova to win Miami Masters

Svetlana Kuznetsova shocked a distracted Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 to win the $6.9-million Miami Masters in an all-Russian battle.

The 12th-seeded Kuznetsova, 2004 US Open champion, collected her trophy just a week after lifting the New York Grand Slam.

The victory Saturday returns Kuznetsova to the top 10 of WTA rankings.

"I was not expecting this," said the winner after defeating her third former number 1 player of the week (Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Sharapova).

"I was enjoying myself so much. I've been working very hard. I deserve this title, I gave my best." Sharapova committed 16 forehand errors in the first set and was put off her game by a small plane droning over head with an advertising banner trailing.

The annoyance was finally chased away by a police helicopter. The defeat was the second in Miami for Sharapova after losing in 2005 to Kim Clijsters.

"It was tough today, she was hitting winners off both sides and I couldn't put two points together," said Sharapova. "I was a little tired from my previous matches."

The title marked the sixth for Kuznetsova
