Tomas Berdych finally got a win on the board at the ATP World Tour Finals as he saw off Andy Roddick in straight sets yesterday afternoon.

Since making the Wimbledon final this summer Berdych has struggled to recapture the form that saw him beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but his win saw him get to somewhere near his best.

Both Berdych and Roddick were without a win after losing to Djokovic and Nadal in their opening matches. Both players needed to win if they wanted to keep their hopes of making it to the semi-finals alive.

Both men may have lost their opening matches but it was Roddick who ad looked the most impressive as he pushed Nadal in three highly competitive sets - the American was possibly the favourite going into the match.

And this clash was all about the serve; Roddick was once again on top form as she dropped just four points in the opening five games.

While Berdych did open his serving account with a double fault he soon got into the swing of things and looked equally as impressive.

The first nine games went with serve and Roddick was leading 5-4 when he made a serious assault on the Berdych serve.

Despite coming under some serious pressure from the American, Berdych stood strong to once again level at 5-5.

In the eleventh game it was his turn to pile on the pressure as he battled back from 40-15 down to get the first break of the match to lead 5-6 - he was left to serve for the set.

And Beredych held his nerve as he comfortable served out the opening set to take it 7-5.  At the beginning of the second it was serve that once again dominated as the pair were level at 2-2./

But it was the Serb who struck first as he broke through Roddick’s defences for a second time to break in the fifth game and take a decisive lead.

The O2 may have been behind the popular American but Roddick couldn’t get the set back on serve and Berdych delivered the hammer blow in game nine to break again and take the match 7-5 6-3.

Speaking to the BBC after the match Berdych said: "It feels great. None of these matches are easy, especially today against Andy because I played him this year three times and he won all three.

"I'm happy after losing to Djokovic to get back on the court and start to play my tennis again and feel good on court. That's what I needed.”

Berdych will now face world number one Rafael Nadal in his final round robin match while Roddick will face Novak Djokovic.
