Tomas Berdych needed just forty six minutes and dropped just a single game as he reached the second round of the Aircel Open in Chennai.

The Czech star is the top seed at the tournament in India this week and was in a ruthless mood as he bulldozed Frederico Gil.

Berdych, who is looking to capitalise on a fantastic 2010 season, broke serve five times and served up opening bagel set.

Gil managed to get on the board in the second set but he couldn't stop the rot as Berdych, who was in action in Abu Dhabi last week, notched up an impressive win.

Speaking to the ATP after the match Berdych said: "I was really looking forward to starting first match of the season. I played really solid, quite aggressive. I don't think these kind of quick matches happen very often, it is pretty rare.

"I'm pretty used to the conditions - we start in late afternoon and I think all of us players are used to this heat and humidity. I came here to try my best. I'll try my best to win another match and go step by step."

Berdych will now face Ivan Dodig in the second round.

Stanislas Wawrinka also enjoyed a straight sets win as he saw off home favourite Rohan Bopanna 6-4 6-4.

He will now play David Goffin in the second as he made it a poor day for India on the court as he saw off Somdev Devvarman.

Fourth seed Richard Gasquet was also in action in an all French clash as he faced Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the opening round.

Gasquet dropped just four games on the way to a 6-1 6-3 win and set up a clash with Bjorn Phau.
