Vera Zvonareva was the women's night match in the Arthur Ashe court and she came through against Sabine Lisicki.

The twenty second seed had seen her odds to win the title slashed this week and was potentially set to be a handful for the second seed.

But Zvonareva improved her game from the last couple of rounds as she dropped just five games during the straight sets win.

Zvonareva is looking to go one better than the runner-up of twelve months ago and she broke immediately to open up a 3-0 lead.

And while Lisicki did break she was unable to stay with Zvonareva as she reeled off another three games to take the set 6-2.

Into the third and there was some stern resistance from Lisicki as she rallied with Zvonareva from the back of the court.

But the errors in her game were to be her undoing, committing twenty eight in the match to just eleven winners.

The seventh game saw Zvonareva get the break that she needed to lead 4-3. She consolidated the break before finding a way through the Lisicki defences for the second time in the set to seal the win.

Speaking to the WTA after the match Zvonareva said: "I think I played a very consistent match today and was able to raise the level of my game compared to my three previous matches.

"She started playing a bit more consistent in the second set and took a lead, but I held my serve and broke her back eventually and won the match in two sets."

Zvonareava will now face Samantha Stosur in the next round as the Australian came through a mammoth match with Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-7(15-17) 6-3.

Stosur may have lost the record breaking tie break in the at second set but she rallied in the third to seal a highly entertaining match 6-2 6-7(15) 6-3.

There was also a win for Flavia Pennetta as she saw off thirteenth seed Shaui Peng 6-4 7-6(8-6) and will now face Angelique Kerber.
