Andy Murray says is close at the top of the men's game but change has dome slowly.

Murray is back in action this week as he aims to defend his Roger's Cup title in Montreal where Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are also in action.

It will be the first time that Novak Djokovic has headed a field since becoming world number one at Wimbledon as the Serb finally broke the stranglehold Federer and Nadal had at the top of the rankings.

Speaking to the Gazette the Scot said: "It's closer now. I've had good results this year, especially in the Grand Slams, and if I win here and do well at the U.S. Open, which I didn't do last year, then I have a shot as passing Federer."

"Nadal was chasing Federer for three or four years and it took Djokovic a four or five years.

Murray made it to the semi-final of Wimbledon, losing out once again to Nadal, before going on to win three rubber for Great Britain in the tie against Luxembourg.

Murray is looking to win a third title in Canada and has been training in Florida ahead of the U.S. hard court swing that culminates at the U.S. Open in New York.

"I get ready for this tournament by practising in Florida where it's hot and humid and that gives me an edge over players who come here from Europe where it's cold."

Murray will face either Kevin Anderson of Pablo Andujar in the second round after being given a first round bye.

He could face in form America Mardy Fish in the quarters before another possible semi-final showdown with Nadal.
