The Brit broke into the world's top 50 for the first time after reaching the quarter-finals of last week's China Open and having battled through two qualifying rounds, maintained his momentum with a 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over the Argentine.
Next up is third seed and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who after receiving a bye in the second round, will start the tournament eyeing his fifth tournament win of the season.
Elsewhere on Monday, ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Florian Mayer 6-3 6-2 while Alexander Zverev continued his upward curve with a 6-4 6-2 win over John Isner.
Big-serving Ivo Karlovic was also in action but could not get the better of Vasek Pospisil as the Canadian won 7-6 6-4.
The first round in Shanghai continues on Tuesday, with the highlight matches seeing Juan Martin del Potro taking on David Goffin, Grigor Dimitrov facing Richard Gasquet and Lucas Pouille doing battle with Fernando Verdasco, while Novak Djokovic meets Fabio Fognini in the second round.
