Bernard Tomic produced the performance of the opening day as he battled back from two sets down to win a five set thriller.
The teenager is the big Australian hope and with the crowd on his side he produced an astonishing fightback against former semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco.
Tomic was not outclassed in those opening two sets and he took the second set to a tie break.
He was in a spot of bother in the third set and it looked like he was going down in a straight sets defeat until he began to turn it around.
But Verdasco's serve failed him later in the set and it was Tomic's chance to pounce to take it 6-4.
Verdasco was clearly struggling with a stomach issue and Tomic took full advantage as he dropped just two games in the fourth set to level it at 2-2, much to the delight of the crowd.
But the fifth set was also tightly contested but the momentum was with the teenager as he took the match 4-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 to progress into the second round.
There he will face Sam Querrey as the American came through a more straight forward match 6-3 6-2 6-2 against Kenny De Schepper.
There were also wins on the opening day for Mardy Fish as he breezed past Gilles Muller 6-4 6-4 6-2.
Juan Martin Del Potro had to battle back from dropping the opening set against Adrian Mannarino to come through in four 2-6 6-1 7-5 6-4 and book a second round clash with Blaz Kavcic, who saw of Great Britain's James Ward.
