Konta into Beijing quarter-finals

Johanna Konta is through to the quarter-finals of the China Open after a three-set victory over Karolina Pliskova in Beijing.

In a match delayed by rain, the British number one held her nerve to down the world number six 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-2) and set up a last-eight meeting with either Simon Halep or Zhang Shuai.

The 25-year-old had never beaten Pliskova heading into the contest but showed few nerves as she raced through the opening set in just 23 minutes.

There was bound to be response from her opponent and the Czech Republic star levelled affairs to set up a decider.

It went to the tie-breaker but the Brit showed her class when it mattered most to close out the match, with Konta still in with a chance of reaching the season-ending WTA Tour finals in Singapore.

She sits 10th in the standings and must improve two spots to make the prestigious event, while a place in the world's top 10 could be on the cards after her exploits in the Far East.
