Novak Djokovic booked his place the in Roger’s Cup final in Montreal after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to retire with an injury.
It was a highly anticipated clash between the new world number one and the big hitting Frenchman after Tsonga dumped Roger Federer out of the tournament in the third round.
But Tsonga was forced to retire mid-way through the second set with an injury to his right arm 6-3 3-0 down.
It was a highly competitive first set as both men were strong on serve - and the opening nine games saw the players locked together at 5-4.
But as Tsonga served to stay in the set Djokovic put his foot on the gas and with a couple of outrageous service returns he had the break and the first set - much to the delight of the Serb.
And early break saw Djokovic open up a 3-0 lead and while Tsonga did continue to play to a high level he called for the trainer.
But the trainer was unable to ease the injury enough for the Frenchman to continue and he halted the match - which saw Djokovic to progress to the final.
Speaking to the ATP after the match Djokovic said: “I reached another final, which makes me really happy.
"I did win this tournament before, which helps a little bit. I really like playing in Montreal. I think the atmosphere is really good.
“The crowd is coming in big numbers. Obviously I'm lifting the level of my game each match, which is important prior to tomorrow's challenge."
Should Djokovic lift the Roger’s Cup later today he will become the first player in history to win five Masters titles in one season having already won in Indian Wells, Miami, Rome and Madrid.
He will now face the in form America Mardy Fish as he overcame Janko Tipsarevic 6-3 6-4 in the first semi-final.
