United facing Rooney decision

Manchester United could attempt to move Wayne Rooney on before his deal ends but his wages would prove to be a stumbling block.

Rooney has found himself on the bench for United of late and his dip in form led to the forward being named among the substitutes for England in their 0-0 draw in Slovenia.

Reports indicate the club could seek to offload their captain after a disappointing start to the season, despite the fact he has been publicly backed by manager Jose Mourinho.

The report, originally from the Daily Mirror, says Mourinho and the United hierarchy are considering paying off the rest of his contract rather than wait for any potential suitors to come forward.

Such a scenario appears unlikely given the 30-year-old largely retains the support of the club's fans and it would cost United around £26million if they make the decision to pay off the remaining 20 months of his contract.

There is MLS and Chinese Super League interest in Rooney and if he cannot force his way back into the United side a January exit isn't out of the question, but any speculation the club could pay off the remainder of his deal at this stage appears wide of the mark.
