After a nineteen year hiatus Harrison Ford returns to the big screen as Dr Henry Jones Jr, aka Indiana Jones, adventurer and professor of history and archaeology in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
His bullwhip, leather jacket and wide brimmed fedora have become iconic symbols of this popular characters along with John Williams' well known score.
Although Ford is now synonymous with the role of Indiana Jones it's hard to believe that he was not the first choice for Lucas, who had already worked with him on several pictures, Spielberg however wanted Ford for the role.
Despite this auditions began and little known, at the time, Tom Selleck was cast. But despite contractual commitments to magnum PI he was forced to leave the role.
Spielberg once again suggested Ford and Lucas gave in and cast him, just three weeks before principal photography began.
Indiana Jones burst onto the big screen in 1981 with the release of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was set in 1936.
Indy is a respected archaeologist and professor at a college in New England. But Jones is pitted against the Nazis as they try to discover the location of the ark of the Covenant, which is believed to contain the Ten Commandments, in a bid to make their army invincible.
