Cruises will sail through the credit crunch in 2009 so why not hop onboard?

Holiday

If you are lucky enough not to be afraid of the ocean even after watching the Titanic over and over, then hop onboard in 2009 to a Cruise holiday. Cruise Critic joins FemaleFirst to look at swimmingly good opportunities for UK travelers in the upcoming year.

The number of cruise travelers in 2008 reached 1.55 million, making for a 14% increase on the previous year – and they predict it to rise again.

UK cruises are said to be moving away from their stereotype “wed and nearly dead” image and is now considered a holiday for absolutely anyone and everyone. Because of 2008’s boom, the demand for more cruise liners has resulted in more needing to be filled. With these sparkling shiny new liners on the waters, inclusive package deals are now even cheaper than previous years and are more often than not a fantastic value for money including not just accommodation but buffet meals, main restaurant venues, entertainment and transport from port to port. In some lucky instances, even airfare can be offered also.

This bigger and better mega ship trend is continuing throughout the New Year with the launch of the Oasis of the Seas, a ship that sails 16 decks high, and is 40% larger than the next biggest cruise ship around. With a capacity of 5,200 guests, it is clear that not only does size matter, but it’s what you fill that massive space with that counts. With its own Central Park complete with real grass and trees, a boardwalk with a Carousel and a water-based theatre to name just a few of the features, it’s obvious that when people want a holiday to escape from their normal lives, then it really is possible on a cruise.

And although it may be a little hard to stay in what is essentially a floating hotel for a long period of time, travel providers now offer shorter cruises for travelers who are new to cruising or who may be slightly claustrophobic at the thought of a fortnight onboard. These one-to-three night cruises, often called “samplers” can not only be a fantastic way for someone to find their sea-legs, but are great for a typical “weekend away” type holiday; whether the occasion is a stag/hen party, or just a weekend off work, there are popular nearby locations to stop off at for an all round worthwhile trip. Providers of these samplers include Thomson, Royal Caribbean, NCL, P&O, and Fred Olsen.

So what about paying for the cruise? Certainly there are bound to be bargains galore in 2009 in every aspect of business, but according to Cruise Critic, the best way to get your money’s worth is the good old fashioned last minute deal. With hugely expensive liners on the seas at the minutes, cabins must be filled to make back money spent on their construction, and if you have some money and are ready to leave the next day, then that might just be the perfect time to get away

However, there are always costs to consider and last year fuel surcharges went from £2 per person per day to a jaw dropping £19 per person per day. Cruise Critic claims that as the fares do drop for cruise holidays, it will be the extras that liners will be looking at increasing their profit margins in. Although many passengers will in fact receive more for their money, if they hope to add any additional treats such as spa trips or specialty dining, then they will need to be prepared to pay significantly more than previously. After all, you’re stuck on the ship, it’s not as if you can go elsewhere for it, is it?

But for those for whom money is no object, what’s all the fuss about? Cruises are likely to always be considered a luxurious vacation and for the first time in almost a decade, luxury lines such as Seabourn, Oceania and Silversea will be receiving brand new vessels. Not only will this mean they’ll shine brighter than the ocean top, but will be packed to the deck with extravagance.

And for those of us, who live in the real world with bills to pay, do not fear. If anything, going on a cruise this year can be nothing more than a penny-saver. As one of the best ways to visit the Mediterranean, and one of the most relaxing, as a bonus, passengers will not be expected to exchange their currency, therefore avoiding the horrific currency exchange the pound is suffering at the moment. UK travelers will therefore avoid being exposed to unnecessary losses. Hooray!
