The number of foreign tourists who visited Algeria rose significantly in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2003, Tourism Minister Mohamed Seguir Karam has told a Senate committee.

More than 222,000 tourists travelled to Algeria in the first three months of 2004, representing an increase of nearly 12 percent over last year.

Many of the visitors to the north African country were expatriate Algerians, but 74,000 were foreigners - the largest number to visit Algeria since 1991, the year before civil war broke out.

Last year, 1.166 million tourists visited Algeria, a 15 percent rise over the 966,000 visitors in 2002.
