Visiting Copenhagen has definitely become a popular idea

The Eurovision effect has been quite clear, Denmark won the competition and there's been a rise in hotel bookings.

As Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest was announced as the Eurovision Song Contest winner on Saturday, hoteliers in Copenhagen, a potential host city for the 2014 event, are already seeing the benefits, as LateRooms.com today reports an initial week on week rise of 282% in bookings to the city.

Speculation among Eurovision fans that the country’s capital will once again play host to the contest, which was also held there in 2001, has driven a rise in bookings of almost 300% for the May 2014 weekend that the contest will be staged.

The increase will not come as a surprise to Malmö’s hoteliers, who, as the 2013 contest comes to a close in the Swedish city, are humming a happy tune after experiencing a rise of 750% in hotel bookings in the month following Sweden’s Eurovision win in 2012, according to LateRooms.com.

The power of the cult contest has also shone the spotlight on other host cities in previous years. LateRooms.com revealed that Dusseldorf’s hoteliers saw an increase of 24% in bookings in the month following Germany’s win in 2011, and even earlier in 2009, another victory for Scandinavia, saw bookings in Oslo rise by 38% after their winning song was crowned. The beneficial tourism boosts for these cities continues to be felt as the contest goes from strength to strength each year and adds to its die-hard fan following.

“The 282% rise that our properties in Copenhagen saw this weekend due to Denmark’s Eurovision song contest win is really spectacular, and the Eurovision effect seems to have taken hold there already,” commented Lynda Matthews, Head of Marketing at LateRooms.com.

“Our figures show that winning the contest can really put European cities into the spotlight and help to attract visitors, and we hope that fans of the contest will find a hotel for their every need next May in Denmark.”
