"Sitting on my case will help to shut it, honest!"

Long gone are the days of waiting around the carousel for your luggage, eager to get your holiday started, as many Brits are travelling the globe with hand luggage.

An increasing number of Brits prefer to travel abroad with hand luggage to save money.

www.SendmyBag.com revealed that one fifth of Britons heading overseas for holidays between one and two weeks long, are only flying with hand luggage.

The study revealed that 67% admitted that they used hand luggage as it was the cheaper option, leaving Brits trying to attempt to fit everything they need for the trip in a smaller case, as opposed to having checked luggage.

However, one third of holidaymakers end up getting charged as a result of their hand luggage being too big or heavy. 34% admitted to being ‘caught out’ with heavy bag restrictions and had to fork out on average £26 to bring their belongings with them.

Adam Ewart, Founder of SendmyBag.com, made the following comment: “Many holidaymakers are choosing to fly with just hand luggage to save on costs, however airlines are cottoning onto this and some have begun to introduce fares where you pay for your hand luggage separately to your seat. The illusion is that they're breaking down fares so that passengers only pay for what they need, when in fact it's really an extra charge. It won't be long until the majority of airlines begin rolling this out, so even those holidaymakers who consider themselves to be experts at squeezing a week’s worth of clothes into a small holdall won’t be safe from fees for long!

When asked why this was the case and told to select all relevant answers from a list, the results were as follows:

  1. Costs too much to take a suitcase/wanted to save money – 67%
  2. I was able to just about squeeze everything into hand luggage – 41%
  3. Didn’t have enough to pack to warrant a checked suitcase – 32%
  4. Most of my belongings were in a co-travellers suitcase, so I only needed hand luggage – 16%
  5. Didn’t want to take a big/heavy suitcase so I travelled light – 6%
