With over 300 properties currently listed on the site in the UK alone which offer a house swap option, that figure is currently on the increase. The French are on board too with over 400 properties available for house swaps and Spain comes close with just under 400.
For many holidaymakers, a two week break is a luxury to save for during the year, so those with holiday homes are being inventive whilst saving money and opting for a trip to a destination they may not have considered.
Holiday home owner Chris Lee, who owns a cottage in Sussex and advertises it on Owners Direct, said: "I think to some extent we felt a house swap might be a ‘magical mystery holiday’ in that all the decision making about where to go would be taken out of the equation."
Owner Tracey Furness is currently house swapping, exchanging her rental on the Dordogne for a cottage in West Sussex whilst they renovate a further holiday property in the UK.
“It’s also a great way to meet new people and fellow holiday home owners and you often pick up some tips for your own holiday property” said Tracey.
Owners Direct is encouraging its advertisers to offer house swaps as a cost effective way of going on holiday, especially for those who see a break in 2013 as something they may have to cut out because of finances.
Angela Southall, Owners Direct Marketing Manager, said: "So many people have had to tighten the purse strings, so offering your home in a swap is a very economical way of going on holiday. As an added bonus, you may have the chance to go somewhere you’d never imagined exploring."
