Holiday resorts are popular with British travellers

Resort holidays are just the best; food, fun, pool and activities, and if you’re lucky, direct access to a private beach. This type of bliss is what many British holidaymakers crave and bask in when abroad, so it’s no surprise that a fifth never actually leave their chosen resort when on holiday.

Mexico, Tunisia, Maldives and Spain are just some of the sun-soaked destinations where British travellers are happy to stay in resort, where everything they need is already at hand, according to a new survey by MyVoucherCodes.

I guess wherever you go you will need to stay aware of the ‘unsafe’ places but it’s a shame so many people miss out on the culture of the country they’re in simply because they don’t want to leave...

However, 13 per cent of the 1,224 people polled by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk said the reason why they choose not to step foot out of their resort is because the feel ‘unsafe’ outside of it.

The survey revealed that more than half of holidaymakers opt to stay in a resort when going abroad, compared to just over two fifths who book a hotel, under a third who go for apartments and a further 19 per cent who choose camping.

Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “Travel agencies now offer such a large variety of holiday packages that you can basically find everything you need without even leaving your resort.

“With entertainment, restaurants, spas, gyms and sometimes even private beaches, every resort is tailored for people’s needs whether you’re a family, a couple or amongst friends who want to have fun.”

Of the respondents that said they usually stayed in resorts, 28 per cent said they leave their resort ‘occasionally’, whilst only 22 per cent claimed going outside their resort ‘every day’. Almost one in five admitted they ‘never’ leave their resort while on holiday.

Over a third of resort-lovers said they had everything they needed so didn’t have any reason to leave the resort, while a quarter mentioned the fact that they ‘already knew’ the place so they didn’t need to explore outside the resort.

Furthermore, 13 per cent admitted feeling ‘unsafe’ outside the resort whilst 18 per cent claimed that they didn’t want to spend ‘more money’.

Mark added: “I guess wherever you go you will need to stay aware of the ‘unsafe’ places but it’s a shame so many people miss out on the culture of the country they’re in simply because they don’t want to leave their resort.”

According to the results, the top ten countries where British holidaymakers never leave their resort were:

Mexico, Tunisia, Turkey, Cape Town, Greece, Croatia,

Maldives, Mauritius, Spain and Portugal.
