Quarter of British Holidaymakers Actively Exercise During Trip

Holidays may not be all about relaxing for Britons embarking on trips abroad, as more than a quarter actively choose to exercise during their break; with ‘swimming’ topping the poll of the preferred choice of holiday exercise.

There’s plenty of time to keep fit and work out at home here in the UK, but holidays are the one time of year you can really let go and forget about things like that.

www.sunshine.co.uk polled 1,862 UK adults, each of whom had been abroad on holiday in the past 12 months, and the results showed that compared to a third of holidaymakers who normally exercise at home, only 26 per cent kept up with their fitness on their travels.

The top reasons for exercising on holiday were revealed as; good fitness facilities at the accommodation; to balance out excessive holiday eating; to keep fit; and because exercising on holiday helped people to relax.

Chris Clarkson, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: “In my opinion, there are better ways to spend a holiday than to be exercising - after all, you are on holiday.

“Obviously the odd swim in the pool or sea is part and parcel of a hot holiday, but people shouldn’t waste precious holiday hours exercising too much.”

Furthermore, the most popular holiday exercise activities were revealed as swimming, running on the beach, gym, exercise classes and yoga.

Chris added: “There’s plenty of time to keep fit and work out at home here in the UK, but holidays are the one time of year you can really let go and forget about things like that.

“Yes, you’ll probably be eating a bit more than usual and lying about more than you normally would, but you can just burn those calories off when you get back!”
