Calvin Harris defended his 'X Factor' stage invasion, and blasted the show as "very stupid".

The pop producer danced with a pineapple on his head next to John and Edward during their performance of Queen's 'Under Pressure' on Saturday night (14.11.09), but said he did it to make a point about the show.

He told BBC Radio 1: "I was inspired to make a mockery of the show. As a music competition it is a joke and I think it should be treated as such.

It could have been an idiot with a knife. From now on security will be seriously stepped up.

Meanwhile Simon has defended the show after pop star Sting blasted it as karaoke and said none of the contestants were going anywhere

"Dancing on stage with a pineapple on your head is a very stupid thing to do, but I also want to suggest that it's a very stupid television programme."

Calvin has since claimed he is a fan of tuneless twins John and Edward, who survived another week on the show last night (13.11.09), and his protest was directed at show boss Simon Cowell.

He added: "I want them to win, I love them. Where can they go from there? Where can 'X Factor' go from there? It's not a music competition.

"If you look at music it's a frightening stranglehold that Simon Cowell has over the got over the entire music chart in the UK at the moment."

Calvin - who had been due to appear on spin off show 'The Xtra Factor' after the main show - was thrown out of the studio and banned from returning.

A spokesperson for the show told The Sun newspaper: "It could have been an idiot with a knife. From now on security will be seriously stepped up."

Meanwhile Simon has defended the show after pop star Sting blasted it as "karaoke" and said none of the contestants were "going anywhere".

He said he was disappointed by the comments and invited the 'Every Breath You Take' singer to appear on the show to demonstrate his talents to the hopefuls.

He also branded the star "pompous" and added: "The whole point is that all the contestants are here because doors have been slammed in their faces from record companies. They deserve a break."
