Matt Smith has been getting tips on playing Doctor Who from Christian Slater.

Hollywood star Christian passed his advice for coping with fame to the actor when they appeared together in a stage production of 'Swimming With Sharks' in London's West End.

Matt- a relative unknown before landing the role of the Timelord in the cult BBC drama -said: "He's amazing. I've learned a great deal from him. It's going to be interesting."

I can't claim to know it as well as that, but I'm going to make it my business to do so

The 26-year-old British star also admits producers are altering his flamboyant dress sense for the role - but added he refuses to cut his long hair.

He told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "I'm not sure what the Doctor will wear at the moment. I'm a very elaborate dresser - they're trying to tone down what I wear in real life for the character.

"I'm a fan of long coats and rather dashing scarves in everyday life. I want him to look the part but I'm not chopping my hair off. I think it's very Doctorish."

Despite being the youngest-ever actor to play the Doctor, Matt has been honest about his scant knowledge of the show beforehand.

He added: "I wasn't a Who fan - I have to be honest, but I'm realising people love this show, are avid, avid fans of it and they know history and are part of it."I can't claim to know it as well as that, but I'm going to make it my business to do so."
