US talk show host David Letterman has revealed he was the victim of an alleged extortion plot, stemming from sexual relationships he has had with women he works with.
David Letterman was the victim of an alleged $2 million extortion plot over "sexual relations" he had with several female colleagues.
The married US talk show host made the revelation on his programme 'Late Show' last night (01.10.09), explaining he received a package three weeks ago from someone threatening to reveal all about his dalliances.
He said: "This morning, I did something I've never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.
"I had to tell them how I was disturbed by this, I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family. I felt menaced by this.
Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people - I need to certainly protect my family.
"And I had to tell them all the creepy things that I have done. The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show. My response to that is, yes I have."
The 62-year-old star - who wed his long-term partner Regina Lasko in March, with whom he has a son Harry, born in 2003 - admitted his revelation was upsetting and could damage his personal life.
He said: "Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people - I need to certainly protect my family."
David claims he found the package in the back of his car.
In it was a letter claiming the author knew of some "terrible things" David had done.
He called his lawyer, and the case was given to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
David took part in a sting operation, resulting in an arrest yesterday. The blackmailer works on documentary and news show '48 Hours' and has been charged with attempted grand larceny and suspended from network CBS.
CBS spokesman Chris Ender says "Letterman's comments on the broadcast tonight speak for themselves."
