David Letterman made a public apology to his wife last night (05.10.09).

The US talk show host spoke for the first time since revealing he was the victim of an alleged extortion plot over his relations with a number of female staff on his programme 'Late Show'.

Speaking of Regina Lasko - his partner of 23 years whom he married in March - David said: "She has been horribly hurt by my behaviour, and if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it

"So let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me."

I was madly in love with him at the time. I would have married him. He was hilarious.

He also found time during the show to make jokes out of his situation, but did also give a message of thanks to current and past staff members at his production company, Worldwide Pants.

He added: "I'm terribly sorry I put the staff in that position. Inadvertently, I just wasn't thinking ahead.

"And, moreover, the staff here has been wonderfully supportive to me, so, again, my thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I've gotten myself involved in."

Last week David, 62, revealed the alleged $2 million blackmail plot against him, leading to the arrest of '48 Hours' producer Robert 'Joe' Halderman, in connection with the case. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted grand larceny and is currently released on $200,000 bail.

So far two women have been named as involved with the TV host, Holly Hester and Stephanie Birkitt - who was, until recently, Robert's girlfriend.

Holly has spoken out about her relationship with David, saying: "I was madly in love with him at the time. I would have married him. He was hilarious."
