The 49-year-old presenter - who quit the morning television show in 2008 having been its main anchor for 10 years - admits she suffered a breakdown while on the programme because of her mother's battle with Alzheimer's.

She said: "I had a breakdown dealing with 'GMTV' and what my mum went through.

"When I look back, I do think, 'God, I was severely depressed'. I didn't want to go out."

When I look back, I do think, 'God, I was severely depressed'. I didn't want to go out.

Fiona also claims she found it difficult to lead a normal life with her two children, Nathaniel, 10 and Mackenzie, seven - whom she had with fellow 'GMTV' presenter Martin Frizell.

She said: "It was everything I could do to just go into work and look after the children. I was not functioning normally at all.

"Eamonn Holmes used to say, 'You're seriously depressed, you need to get help,' and I'd say, 'No, no. I'm fine'. But everyone's got hard times in their lives so I don't really want to moan about it."

Fiona also admits she no longer watches 'GMTV' but keeps in touch with some of her colleagues.

She added to new! magazine: "I'm too busy getting the children ready for school. I text Ben Shephard and I see Gloria De Piero, GMTV's former political correspondent a lot. Lorraine Kelly, Kate Garraway, Penny Smith and I keep in touch, but we're all busy - and they've got 4am starts!"
