Joe McElderry's mum stopped him from showing off his singing talents when he was younger.
The 18-year-old Geordie - who was crowned winner of 'The X Factor' last night (13.12.09) - has wowed the nation with his pitch-perfect voice but was never able to showcase his talents because mum Eileen would also hog the microphone at family events.
Joe's proud grandma Hilda Joyce said: "We're all very musical and love a sing-a-long. But Joe never pushed himself forward, so I was quite surprised when he got up to sing on the karaoke at his Aunt Christine's party. When he opened his mouth we couldn't believe it
He kept saying, 'Oh Grandma, I can't believe how lucky I am
"My daughter Eileen always hogs the mike at parties, so Joe didn't stand a chance!"
Hilda and Eileen supported Joe ever since his first 'X Factor' audition and admits Joe was stunned by how much support he was receiving from the public.
Hilda added to Yours magazine: "Eileen and I just had to be there for him at every show, even though we didn't get much time with him on our own because he was always surrounded by so many people. But it was great seeing how much he was enjoying himself. He kept saying, 'Oh Grandma, I can't believe how lucky I am.'"
