'The Inbetweeners' star Joe Thomas was "more pathetic" than his character at approaching women.
Joe said although his teenage years bore resemblance to schoolboy Simon Cooper in the Channel 4 comedy show - about the ill fated plans of four adolescent boys desperate to become accepted into adult society and lose their virginity - he was even worse at approaching girls.
He said: "I never humiliated myself to the same extent as the guys in the show, but I think I've been, in a way, more pathetic - at least they actually try and do stuff, I was just too shy. I just satisfied myself with being in love with every girl I was friends with.
It's just tough being an adolescent boy - you've got no money you've got no car, you're spotty, you live with your parents, it is the toughest time of your life
"I hadn't had any dismal failures with girls until after I was 16, but then I didn't have any successes either, in fact I hadn't even kissed a girl until after I had done my GCSEs."
Joe also said he was initially attracted to the show because of its unflinching portrayal of adolescence.
He added: "I took a while to get used to the directness of the script, in that there's no messing around - they just go for it and tell it quite straight. There's no punches pulled.

Joe was speaking at the launch of the Vinspired National Awards 2009 - which honours young people's achievements in completing voluntary work.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at London's IndigO2 venue on Wednesday (26.11.09).
