'X Factor' star Lucie Jones feared she'd broken her nose after Joe McElderry threw a tambourine in her face.

Tensions rose during rehearsals for the group singing spot on the ITV talent show yesterday (25.10.09), when the tambourine, thrown up in the air by Joe, accidentally landed on the Welsh beauty.

She screamed at her fellow contestant: "Ouch! What the hell did you do that for? It really hurt."

All of the ten contestants had tambourines, which they launched skyward during their performance of Alphabeat song 'Fascination' - but Joe's was the only one to land unfortunately.

It's a really delicate balance in the house because you want everyone to get on well - but they're all competing against each other.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Poor Lucie was smacked square in the face.

"She grabbed her nose and everyone feared she'd broken it. But it was just a nasty bruise so we covered it with extra-thick make-up.

"Joe was devastated. He just kept apologising. Lucie got over it eventually and calmed down. But it was a bit of a shock."

Show bosses are keen for all the contestants to get on, as all finalists have to live in the same house in London for the duration of their time in the competition, but with fans constantly gathering outside the house and a gruelling rehearsal schedule, sources say relations are fraught.

An insider said: "It's a really delicate balance in the house because you want everyone to get on well - but they're all competing against each other."

Lucie was reportedly already feeling under pressure after head judge Simon Cowell blasted her performance on Saturday's (24.10.09) show.
