Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen

Modern Family had been a massive success, with both audiences and critics alike falling head over heels for the ensemble comedy.

With the show's award winning third season hitting Blu-Ray and DVD this week, two of the shows stars Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen took some time out to talk about the show.

This third season of Modern Family found you all at a creative peak. What did you love most about it?

TY BURRELL: I think we are the beneficiary of a very, obviously, ridiculously talented writer’s room. But, also a stable writer’s room, which is kind of rare if a show does well. They usually get poached or they go off…

JULIE BOWEN: …Or they make their own shows and they leave us for greener pastures. I also that think that having a large ensemble cast pays off in later seasons when you’re running dry on stories.  You can start mixing and matching different groups of people in a way that you don’t necessarily have those options. I mean, if The Brady Bunch were only three people, it would not have been much of a bunch.

BURRELL: Two seasons, that’s it!

The Dunphy family had to face some grown up issues this season, which really made from some wonderfully awkward but real episodes. Like having the kids bust in on an “intimate” moment between Phil and Claire, perhaps?

BURRELL: We have kids, so sometimes those are a little terrifying.

BOWEN: I found it wildly uncomfortable

BURRELL: Because you’re like, “Oh no, I’m going to have to do this for real!”

BOWEN: I thought, “We’re doing this?” Then it aired and they laughed and I felt like I had been seen in the shower. It was very outside of my comfort zone to be talking so intimately even in a very funny way about the embarrassing things that we all go through. That’s what I love about our show, but there’s definitely moments where I’m like, “Oh, too much” and those are probably the best moments.

What is the best part about watching a series on Blu-ray and DVD?

BOWEN: I got into some shows late.

BURRELL: Breaking Bad.

BOWEN: Yes, Breaking Bad or Mad Men. That our show would be like that for somebody to discover and go, “I like this. I like it so much I don’t want to wait.  I press play again? That would be really exciting and fun.

BURRELL: That is really, really cool if that’s the case.  That’s pretty awesome!

Modern Family Season 3 is available on Blu-ray and DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
