Rachel Adedeji "passed away" twice after being born three months premature.
The 'X Factor' finalist - who has been in the bottom two acts in both of the shows so far - weighed just 2lbs when she was born and couldn't breathe on her own.
Her father, Ray, said: "She was supposed to be born in November but actually arrived in August. She was really, really small and weighed about the same as a bag of sugar.
"She passed away twice and was brought back to life with the help of oxygen. It was an awful time."

The 17-year-old singer's family think her fighting spirit will help her cope with the stresses of the ITV talent show.
Her aunt Leyo explained to The Sun newspaper: "She was covered in tubes but she never gives in and that's why she's here now.
"Rachel's normally a happy girl but she cried after being in the bottom two on Sunday (18.10.09). The last time I saw her cry was when she was a little baby. It broke her father's heart."
Ray, who used to sing in a band, also thinks Rachel got her love of music from him.
Her passion led to her being bullied at school, but those close to her insist the experience only made her more determined to succeed.
Sister Sandra has also called for Rachel to have a makeover ahead of Saturday's show (24.10.09), claiming her funky hair makes her look too much like model-and-singer Grace Jones.
Rachel has so far survived in the show's sing-off against girl group Kandy Rain and 21-year-old singer Rikki Loney.
