Vernon Kay wept as he was presented with an honorary degree from his hometown university yesterday (09.07.09).

The presenter - who already has a degree in environmental sciences from Manchester Metropolitan University - said it was one of the proudest days of his life as he accepted the doctorate for services to entertainment from the University of Bolton.

Phoebe thinks I am getting a 'High School Musical' award and thinks I am going to do a song and a dance so I hope she thinks I am Troy.

He told the audience: "Apart from the birth of my two little girls, this is most proudest moment of my life. This award means so much, thank you so much, it means a lot.

"To be here with you guys and to be given an award by my local town... I'm not going to carry on because I'm going to burst into tears."

"I did have a speech prepared but I'm not going to say it. Thank you so much it does mean a lot and I appreciate it.

"I am really chuffed because it is a sign of recognition for my work. It feels lovely to be wearing my home town gown.

"Everyone in the North West has got that welcoming attitude which is very unique."

Vernon - who is married to fellow TV star Tess Daly - was watched at the ceremony at Bolton Methodist Victoria Hall by his parents, aunt and four-year-old daughter Phoebe and admitted that the youngster was bemused by the occasion.

He said: "Phoebe thinks I am getting a 'High School Musical' award and thinks I am going to do a song and a dance so I hope she thinks I am Troy."

Tess - who also has a six-week-old daughter, Amber, with the star - was unable to attend due to work commitments.
