Holby City

Annalese is working in theatre with Michael but her whole life has collapsed around her in the last month. Michael slept with Donna and now Annalese is responsible for a patient's death and has been caught trying to cover it up. Today is the day she will discover her fate.

Tom presents his final report to Maddy, proud of what he has written but when he presents it to Ric, he shreds the whole thing. Tom can't believe it, but Ric explains that he knows it is a tissue of lies and if any of it had got out his good name would have been ruined.

Ric tells Tom that he's had enough and is considering kicking him out of med school. Tom tries to reason with Ric and says that he will do anything to turn this around. So Ric gives him another report to complete, it's a massive amount of work and he wants it by 5pm. Tom leaves but doesn't know what to do. He sees Maddy and explains what just happened. He's worried that if his father finds out what has happened it might jeopardise his training and it may even lose him his inheritance.

Elliot is on the phone, checking to see if the CT scanner is available. He has to perform a special scan on a ‘patient' - Samson his dog. Elliot tells Martha that he needs to operate as soon as possible but she and Ben are doubtful about the operation. Elliot is determined, he's the only chance Samson has, so they agree to help.

Ric calls Annalese to his office, the Trust is being sued over the Hewitt death and the police are investigating. Ric informs her that she is suspended immediately pending the police investigation and he reminds her that the police will want to interview her and may arrest her on charges of manslaughter. Ric advises her not to speak to anyone until she has a lawyer. A shocked Annalese exits the office to find Michael waiting for her, and with tears in her eyes she walks past him.

Michael can't bear seeing Annalese like this - after all this is his fault.

Tom tells Maddy that he needs a day with no distractions to get on with the job. He sets about treating patients and is diagnostically brilliant, striking up a great rapport with them all. He accepts an offer to do a patient a personal favour in return for a glowing reference to his consultant - Mr Griffin. The favour is to get some flowers and wine for his wife. Next, he needs to put off his father and he cancels lunch saying that he is too busy doing a special assignment for the Director of Surgery.

Michael cancels his next operation - he needs to hire a lawyer for Annalese as soon as possible before her interview with the police. Annalese goes to drive home but reverses badly and nearly hits a man. She just sits in the car as her world starts to fall apart.

With the help of Ben, Elliot smuggles Samson into his office. Elliot needs to perform this operation without anyone knowing, especially Connie, but he needs help in the theatre. Elliot asks Joseph if he'll assist on a lung procedure and Joseph agrees until he realises he's being asked to operate on a dog. Joseph simply can't do something so unhygienic and says he's out. The commotion grabs Jac's attention and she wants to know what all the fuss is about. Martha tries to stop her, but it's too late- the cat is out of the bag - or dog. Elliot looks over at Jac and asks for help, and surprisingly she agrees. She is focussing on her career and has found a way to inveigle herself with Elliot - the dog.

Ric is up on HolbyCare, treating a patient, Ken who asks Ric "What's all this about a special assignment?" The patient is Tom's dad and Ric informs Ken that Tom could have ruined his good name but holds back on the other information, not wanting to ruin Tom's relationship with his father.

Michael meets with the lawyer, Charles, the man Annalese nearly ran over. It's not a good start but Michael knows Charles could be their saviour and talks to him off the record. Annalese is his wife and he wants to protect her, he'll say or do anything. It was a standard procedure, the patient was overweight and that is what caused his death. Charles tells Michael that altering the case notes is the biggest problem - it's perverting the course of justice. He doesn't care why Annalese altered the notes, he just needs a ‘legitimate' reason to clear her name.

Tom finds the patient for whom he did a personal favour, only to discover he's drunk the whole bottle of wine himself. The patient puts up a fight and causes a commotion - Tom doesn't need this right now.

Annalese is still in her car, when Ric sees her. He says how sorry he is that she's been suspended but it's too much for Annalese. She starts to cry and desperately needs to talk to someone about the state of her marriage. Ric takes her aside and she starts to tell him all about Michael's affairs and his fling with Donna.

The patient Michael had bumped has now become an emergency and he has to operate quickly. He requests that Maddy attends and in theatre fishes to find out what Maddy remembers about the Hewitt operation. But Maddy won't play ball - she knows what Michael is doing and she doesn't want to be compromised - she'll tell everyone the truth.

Tom's patient has re-opened his wound so Tom has to perform the minor procedure alone. At first it goes well and the patient's condition is immediately improved but just as he is finishing off, he goes into crisis. Tom tries to find Maddy to help, but she's off the ward. Ric finds Tom with the patient and can't believe what has happened. Ric salvages the situation, and saves the patient.

The operation with Samson goes well but it's not over yet. Ben is outside the theatre, keeping watch as Connie approaches. Elliot and Jac are at a vital stage in the op. Connie asks Ben to step out of the way but he stands his ground. Inside the theatre, Martha can hear Ben's attempts to persuade Connie to go away. It's clear to Connie that something is afoot and glimpses Elliot in the theatre with the dog on the table. She can't believe what she's seeing, but Martha talks to her explaining that the dog means everything to her father. Can she just turn a blind eye this once. Connie agrees but wants everything sterilising afterwards.

After the operation, Michael seeks out Annalese who finally feels able to talk to him after her breakdown to Ric. She tells Michael what he already knows - that she has been suspended and is due to meet their lawyer.

Annalese meets with Charles, who realises she is the woman who nearly ran him over. An embarrassed Annalese sits as Michael weaves his magic and explains everything. It's an amazing performance but Annalese can't take it. She explains that she killed Hewitt. Michael tries to correct her but Annalese has had enough of lying and wants the lawyer to know she is guilty. Charles leaves them as they clearly have issues to sort out.

With no more guilty secrets, Annalese is starting to feel unburdened. For the first time Annalese starts to open up to Michael - explaining how betrayed she feels and how she has now accepted that she needs a new life away from him. Michael tells her to think about her future - why is she punishing herself over this - it's his fault, not hers?

Annalese is about to leave Holby when Ric catches her and reminds her that she is a brilliant anaesthetist - she's too good to throw it all away just because she is worried about her future with Michael. He is sure that the whole thing will blow over and hopes to be working with her in the future.

Elliot manages to stabilise Samson and finish the operation. Elliot carries his dog to the office and waits for him to come round from the anaesthetic. Samson opens his eyes. Elliot is overjoyed, Jac smiles and Elliot thanks her - he doesn't know how he can ever repay her. Martha comes into the office to say that Connie is on her way. Martha and Jac move the dog next door just as Connie opens the door, to see the other door to the office being closed. Elliot is sitting at his desk, he smiles at Connie, she drops a present on Elliot's desk- a dog chew. Elliot smiles - he knows Connie cares.

It hasn't been Tom's day, but it seems to be over. Tom and Maddy end the day drinking in the bar. Ric notices the two of them and he looks over to see the two laughing and joking.
