Holby City

Holby City

The day for the Director of Surgery interviews has finally come and Connie is ready and determined to get this role. She heads into her interview which has Jayne on the board. Connie does her best and seems to impress the board with her speedy, accurate answers. She is asked about Ric’s zero tolerance programme and the board seem shocked by her opinions. She is half way through the discussion when her pager alerts her to an emergency. She has to leave. This couldn’t have come at a worse time. Connie is desperate to impress but has to leave believing she had so much more to say. Michael has paged her as one of her patients needs urgent attention and she heads off to help.

Maria has been emailing Sam – he’s meant to be visiting Holby next month and she can’t wait to see him. Then Donna walks in. She’s still meant to be on compassionate leave, but has been getting so bored at home and she just wants her friends around her. Maria worries that Donna is making a mistake coming back. Donna does her best to put on a brave face, but Maria sees through it. She gives her friend a hug and tells her that today she will support her.

Faye is discreetly having a phone conversation. She doesn’t realise, but Joseph is watching her as she looks furtive. Faye hangs up, and hurriedly rushes inside. She sees Joseph and informs him that she’s just heard that a judge has approved Joseph’s adoption of Archie. All they need to do is sign the paperwork and they’ll be a proper family.

Michael heads into his interview to be grilled by the panel. Michael speaks in admiration of Ric’s zero tolerance policy. The board seem impressed but are sceptical about his future plans.  Michael leaves believing Connie will get the position but the board are impressed with both candidates and as Jayne is CEO, she will have final decision.

Maria gets an email from Sam. Excitedly, she opens it, but is upset when she reads that he isn’t going to visit anymore. Maria tries to phone him but the number doesn’t work. As soon as Maria has the opportunity she heads off to speak to Connie. Maria gingerly enquires as to whether she knows why Sam has changed his number. Connie doesn’t know why but gives Maria the number to his apartment. Maria calls the number but when she gets through she hears the voice of a woman on the answering machine. Suddenly Maria understands – Sam has someone else.

Joseph is happy to hear the news about the adoption but is still concerned about who Faye called on their wedding day. He decides to look at her phone records after guessing her password. He finds that Faye had called out, no one had called her. He looks at the number and realises that the number is Linden’s.

Jayne makes her decision - Michael Spence. Connie hears the news and doesn’t take it well. Connie visits Jayne wanting an explanation but Jayne simply tells her that it wasn’t meant to be. Connie needs more of a reason than that and then it clicks – “is this is about John?” and Jayne admits she has chosen Michael due to Connie’s affair with her husband. Connie can’t believe that after all this time she would use that against her. Connie decides to hand in her notice -  she can no longer work with Jayne or be in a position where she is unable to move up the career ladder.

On the ward, a patient goes into crisis. Donna is the only nurse available to assist, and together with Michael she tries to resuscitate her without success. Michael asks Donna if she would clean the body while he breaks the news to the family. Donna is still emotional over the death of her father and finds the whole ordeal a bit too much.

Michael finds out that he has the job of DOS and is over the moon but suspects something is wrong if he beat Connie to the role. He finds Connie writing her notice letter and knows that she wouldn’t leave just because he got the post. Connie tells Michael about her affair with John.

Maria finds Donna cleaning the body of the patient. Maria is too busy talking about Sam to notice that Donna is falling apart. Suddenly she sees that Donna is getting emotional and apologises, suggesting they go for a drink after work.

Faye asks Joseph for a drink after work. But before they toast the adoption Joseph shows Faye the mobile phone bill which shows the phone call to Linden on their wedding day. Faye sits there as Joseph demands answers. She says nothing and Joseph gets up and walks out, leaving Faye alone.

Michael visits Jayne and explains that he knows what she has done. Michael is now Director of Surgery and isn’t prepared to lose Connie who is worth more to Holby than Jayne. Michael gives Jayne the option of staying and finding herself in a battle with Connie, or leaving Holby City. Jayne knows that she won’t win and decides to leave.  Michael informs Connie of Jayne’s decision and she decides to remain at the hospital.

Donna finishes her shift and heads outside to call Maria just as there’s an incoming emergency.  Someone was hit on the road outside the hospital. Donna can hear Maria’s ringtone and looks over to realise that the emergency is Maria – she has been hit by a car.
