Molly Woods has a beautiful house. That's one of the first things you learn about Halle Berry's latest television role in the series premiere of brand new sci-fi thriller Extant.

The next is that she's been away from her family for a period of 13 months, and her son isn't coping with the changes that have come from her return and her trying to adapt to normal life once more.

This is because Molly Woods is an astronaut, and the 13 months she spent away from her home and family was in outer space on a solo mission.

Technology is one of the big highlights of this show, and with Steven Spielberg behind the series we should really by now know what to expect, but that doesn't mean it's any less beautiful to look at.

Molly's husband John and son Ethan share a tender moment as he's being put to bed, but things get a little weird when Ethan's batteries are changed. His back literally lifts up and John makes some adjustments. It's all very strange. Molly and John's son is a robot, and seemingly started off as a project in John's line of work.

From here on out things only get odder as Molly is told despite her spending the 13 months in space alone, she's pregnant. This ushers a flashback and the special effects used are top-notch whilst the setting is spooky beyond belief, especially when the 'alien' member also on-board the shuttle is discovered following a power-trip.

Great acting, an intriguing storyline and places we've not been to before in a show like this alongside the familiar traits of a sci-fi series all ensure that Extant gets off to a good start.

Extant is available to watch now on Amazon UK Instant Video, and broadcasts in America on CBS.
