Adrian and James Mason

Neighbours star James Mason about his father Adrian

What do you most admire about you dad?

I really respect my dad's passion and drive for success, for both him and myself. I admire the strength and endurance he has to get him through the tough days. It's very contagious.

What is something your dad has taught you or given you some good advice that you have followed?

Dad has given me so much advice over the years, I don't even know where to start. Probably to go out and pursue my career. I am very grateful that I have such devoted support from him, which without, I truly believe I would not have developed the courage or intent to follow my crazy dreams!

Has there been an embarrassing dad moment?

Not one instance as such, but he's always embarrassing me by talking me up to people whenever we are in company and telling them how proud he is. I guess that's not such a bad thing really!

Adrian about his son Neighbours star, James Mason

Adrian and James Mason

When did you realise that James was destined to be an actor?

When he was leaving school and we had the Father and Son talk of what he was going to do with his life. I suggested the trades of Carpentry, Electrician or Plumbing and James said he wanted to be an actor. I think my words were something like – mate, I think you should really get a serious job. Then I thought about it and told him that he should do whatever he is passionate about – provided he worked at it and just didn’t sit on the couch waiting for the phone to ring. To his credit, he worked really hard at networking with all types of people from the industry, joined acting classes and did local theatre, - anything he could to ensure his success.

What are you most proud about James?

A couple of things, James’ quiet but unstoppable drive and determination to get where he wants to be and his balanced and even temperament in his attitude to life. He seems to handle situations calmly and without too much emotional stress but continues working at them to ensure reaches the appropriate solution.

One thing you wish he would stop doing?

James is currently living with us whilst he is waiting to take over his apartment and if he’s not playing the guitar or his drum kit, he’s eating us out of house and home!
