Following the news that Star Trek: Discovery would be coming to Netflix in all territories the streaming service is available (aside from the US and Canada where it’ll be exclusive to CBS), we’ve decided to take a look at five of the biggest franchises which we think could benefit from a revival on television…
5. Harry Potter
Though we now have the Fantastic Beasts series of movies to look forward to, there would be nothing better than to go back to the halls of Hogwarts via a television series, perhaps taking a glimpse into the lives of some unknown students that were getting up to all sorts of mischief whilst Harry and company did their best to battle the Dark Forces. Even a step into the future would work if that would be too much trouble, so that an entirely original story could be brought to viewers. No matter what, Potter fans would likely be happy with any attention this universe got. It’s a cash cow just waiting to be milked.
4. Lord of the Rings
Another franchise that could easily make money with a trip to television is the Lord of the Rings one. The trilogy of Hobbit films did extremely well, so bringing the series back once more for a completely original story on television would be perfect. It’d have to be done well to get the approval of fans however, as author J. R. R. Tolkien is no longer around to approve them.
3. Nightmare on Elm Street
A television series worked for classic horror Psycho with Bates Motel, so who’s to say we couldn’t delve deeper into the history of Freddy Krueger before he became a dream invading murderer? We know that he was the serial killer known as the Springwood Slasher before his death, and though he was taken to court for the crimes, he was released following a technicality. Taking justice into their own hands, the parents of his former victims chased him to a shack near the power plant he worked at and burned him alive. Who wouldn’t want to see that story told on screen?
2. The Hunger Games
Now we’re not saying Katniss Everdeen’s story is one that we should see again, but imagine an anthology series based on the world of The Hunger Games, with older games brought to the small screens across eight episodes or so a season. It would allow us a bit of a history lesson when it comes to the world of Panem and beyond and let the actors involved really shine across eight or more hours. Though there are rumours this same idea could be brought to the big screen, we think it’d be better suited on television.
1. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
“E.T. Phone Home.” But where exactly is home? We’d love to find out, and we think the best way to catch up with the adorable little alien would be with a television series taking place on E.T.’s planet. Whilst we’re not sure how exactly everything would work when it comes to dialogue and the like, it would be beautiful to get to know the world’s most famous extra-terrestrial on a deeper level.
