Caroline Aherne's Royle Christmas

2 months ago 07th May 13:00

Caroline Aherne is reportedly working on a Christmas special of 'The Royle Family'.

The 44-year-old comedienne is said to be writing the first new episode of the sitcom since 2006, when 7.8 million viewers tuned in for 'The Queen of Sheba', which was billed as the final episode ever.

A source said: "Caroline's creative juices are flowing and her scripts will be packed full of humour. Exactly what the stories will be haven't been revealed, but they are already being eagerly anticipated by some top BBC executives.

"A lot of us thought Caroline would never do another one after the last one, 'The Queen of Sheba'. But after a lengthy break, Jim Royle and the clan look set to make a comeback and it will make sensational viewing."

It is believed Caroline will have the scripts ready for the autumn, when her writing partner Craig Cash has completed his new series 'Sunshine'.

The satiric show originally enjoyed three successful series from 1998 until 2000, when Caroline moved to Australia after suffering from severe depression.

It followed the lives of a working class family, the Royles, who lived in Manchester.
