'Doctor Who's time warp

'Doctor Who's fifth series has been shelved until 2010, casting doubts on David Tennant's future as the Timelord.

BBC bosses have been forced to postpone filming series five of the hit time-travelling TV show because it clashes with Tennant playing Hamlet in a theatre production next year.

Tennant is currently filming the fourth series with his new assistant Catherine Tate. Former assistants Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper are also set to return for the series, which will air next spring.

Tennant, who took over the Tardis-travelling role from Christopher Eccleston in 2005, will shoot three special episodes before the end of the year to be aired in 2009.

He is set to quit the show after that, meaning BBC bosses will be forced to search for a new leading man.

A 'Doctor Who' spokesman said: "It is too early to comment on whether David Tennant will return for a fifth series."

Jane Tranter, the controller of BBC Fiction, said: "'Doctor Who' is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."
