Laila Rouass insists she was married "in the eyes of God".
The 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant has hit out at claims she lied by saying she married ex-partner Nasa Khan - with whom she has two-year-old daughter Inez - in 2005, explaining they pledged to be together forever in front of friends and family.
She said: "There's no reason for me to pretend I was married. I wasn't hell-bent on getting hitched but as far as I'm concerned I made my vows before God and that was it.
When I first signed up, I really wanted to win. But now I'm happy to just get through each week. You start off thinking it's only a dance competition, but then you realise people are paying to vote for you.
"If I wanted to be that traditional, I would have gone for a civil ceremony but I didn't because I'm not that way inclined.
"We had a religious ceremony with witnesses from both sides, followed by a reception for friends and family. I was married in the eyes of God."
Laila has also denied claims she lied about her age.
It has been suggested she said she was 34 when she is actually 38, but she insists she has done nothing of the sort.
She told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "If you look on the internet, you'll see stories describing me as anything from 28 upwards. I haven't hidden it, I just can't remember the last time anyone bothered to ask."
Meanwhile, Laila says she is delighted to be partnered with Anton du Beke in BBC talent show 'Strictly Come Dancing', but admits she is unsure whether she will win.
She said: "When I first signed up, I really wanted to win. But now I'm happy to just get through each week. You start off thinking it's only a dance competition, but then you realise people are paying to vote for you."
