Jessica Lange

Jessica Lange

The third season of 'American Horror Story' started on Tuesday in the UK - 'Coven'.

Jessica Lange is back and better than ever in her new role as Fiona Goode - the supreme witch who has mastered a multitude of powers and is intent on staying young and in charge.

This week also came the unfortunate news that the woman herself has said she will be retiring from the industry after a handful of new projects and the fourth season of 'AHS'.

Looking back, it may come as a shock to remember that Lange was the woman who played Dwan in the 1976 adaptation of 'King Kong', and of course the troubled actress Frances Farmer in 1982 movie 'Frances'.

She then went on to play a whole host of other roles, but her career was truly given a revival when she signed up to play the sinister Constance Langdon in 'AHS: Murder House'.

Fans immediately warmed to the sassy and witty star, with her character being able to do no wrong because of her charm and infectious personality.

It is this that has seen her return time and time again, picking up lead roles from writer and producer Ryan Murphy, and she even played a part in getting Kathy Bates on board for the latest season.

With four decades and numerous awards and titles under her belt, she's now planning to pursue a quieter life, and is in the process of penning a children's book.

"I think that's enough." she said to the Los Angeles Times newspaper. "I want to go out with a bang... or should I say, a scare?"

Catch Jessica Lange as Fiona Goode in 'American Horror Story: Coven' on FOX, Tuesdays at 10pm.
