In the battle of cookery competition reality television shows, new Sky Living series My Kitchen Rules comes out miles ahead of the competition... aside from The Great British Bake Off, of course, no one touches THAT Holy Grail.

Judges Jason Atherton and baking queen Lorraine Pascale are great, though one could wish for a little more nastiness when needed. Fish bones in your fish? Scream at the contestant, don't tell them they should be careful. Baking paper? Do the same thing. Don't applaud a contestant because they managed to serve you food, even though it wasn't what they promised on their menu. Send it back!

That being said they're a breath of fresh air. They don't try too hard and the fact they get to try their food before anyone else is allowed to touch a utensil is brilliant.

The teams taking part come from all corners of the UK, each representing a region of the country, a sense of allegiance comes from deep within as a Northern viewer - I want the Liverpudlian lasses to take home the crown, and so far they seem on course to do so, sitting atop of the first challenge leaderboard.

Then there's the 'nasty' Welsh pairing who are to cook in this week's episode. They've been highly critical of everybody else's evenings and three course meals, and so must put on a good show if they're to live up to the standard they've set out for themselves.

Tactical voting seems present from the Southern and Scottish teams, and after the worst cook yet it's the Midlands duo that sit at the bottom of the pile, facing the looming cut from the pack.

I'm not entirely sure what it is about this show that makes it so appealing - there's just something about watching somebody's hopes shatter as their cooks go terribly wrong that is right on so many levels.

My Kitchen rules continues Thursday, February 20 at 9pm on Sky Living and Sky Living HD.
