In celebration of National Bed Month this March, 1,000 adults were asked in a survey carried out by The Fine Bedding Company what they like to do in bed (apart from sleeping).

Do you enjoy watching TV in bed?

With the top answer being streaming boxsets or television programmes over the internet (35%), other popular activities included checking social media feeds (30%), writing emails or working (17%), online shopping (11%) and reading (4%).

The poll's top answers also included eating biscuits, having a cuppa away from the rest of the family and playing addictive games such as Candy Crush.

Further to this it was revealed that the average amount of time spent in bed before actually sleeping is 52 minutes, and despite 83% claiming their love for sleep and it being more important to them than food (66%), every years sees us as a nation get less and less kip.

According to the survey, the average amount of sleep nowadays is 6 hours 23 minutes, compared to our Grandparents' generation who got around 8 hours each night.

Though a huge 56% of us claim to be unsatisfied with the amount of sleep we have, we can't seem to stop watching our favourite shows with some of those polled admitting it's too easy to miss out on beauty sleep in favour of pressing play on 'just one more episode'.

It was also revealed that females on a whole tend to go to bed an hour earlier than men, between 10 and 11pm, with men usually going between 11pm and midnight.

Sara Wadsworth of The Fine Bedding Company commented: "It seems we are becoming a nation of binge-watchers, unable to wait another week for the next episode. Perhaps it's time to bring a bit of balance back into the bedroom and try some sleep-enhancing activities a few nights a week. Instead of switching on a screen; try some gentle yoga stretches, listening to soothing music or even meditating. There are lots of apps available designed to enhance sleep and can easily be listened to in bed, putting that mobile phone to good use."
