Alan Cumming initially wanted to turn down his role in the Good Wife - because he struggled to understand the complicated script.

I actually think my lack of knowledge in the field is quite good; people give me the material and I just fake it

The Scottish actor wasn't interested in playing spin doctor Eli Gold inthe hit legal drama and only considered joining the cast on the advice of his manager.

He tells Britain's Metro, "They initially only asked me to do one or two episodes of the show, and, to be honest, I didn't really want to. I read the script and I didn't understand it. But my manager said I should do it - and that's what you pay a manager for, to force you to do things youdon't realise are a great idea".

Cumming also admits he didn't do any research into playing a campaign strategist, adding, "None at all... I actually think my lack of knowledge in the field is quite good; people give me the material and I just fake it".
