Cheryl Cole's niece failed to make it past the auditions at 'X Factor' yesterday (18.06.12).

Melissa Armstrong, 21, is the step-daughter of Cheryl's brother Joseph, and despite performing one of her aunt's songs - number one hit 'Promise This' - she failed to impress judges Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos.

However, Nicole Scherzinger, who was enjoying her first day as an official judge on the show, wanted to put the young singer through, saying she could imagine her "doing country music or in a girl band".

Although Louis also backed her, her performance did not swing Gary and Tulisa and she did not go through.

Melissa revealed she wanted to audition in previous years but was stopped because of her relationship to Cheryl.

A crowd member at the audition in Newcastle said: "Unfortunately, she is not as talented as other members of her family."

Cheryl became a judge on 'X Factor' alongside Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh in 2008.

In 2011 she left the UK version to appear on the panel of the US show, but was sacked from the show after just four auditions and replaced by Nicole Scherzinger.
